Story of Clay Madsen
October 30, 1973 - November 4, 1992

Clay Madsen was born in Georgetown and raised in Round Rock. He was a dedicated young man who participated in sports while growing up in the community. He was active in the various baseball programs in Round Rock and local soccer programs until he began sports in the Round Rock middle schools, where he played all sports until high school. He played Varsity Football and Varsity Baseball at Round Rock High School until graduation in 1992. He was an achiever, both academically and physically, and set a great example for his fellow students of what being a leader in the community is all about. He planned to attend Texas A&M University and study to be an anesthesiologist. He was an active member of Central Baptist Church of Round Rock at the time of his death and a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

In 1990 he was diagnosed with a malignant cancer and fought for two years to beat the disease; however, he died of this cancer on November 4, 1992, 5 days after his 19th birthday.

The Clay Madsen Recreation center opened in the summer of 2000. The 50,500 sq. ft. facility includes a junior Olympic-size indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, racquetball courts, a gym with basketball courts, and volleyball. In addition, Clay Madsen Recreation Center offers after-school and summer camps, workshops, athletic classes, sport classes and activities for all ages.

“It’s very humbling for the city fathers to recognize Clay in this way.” Larry Madsen said. “I just hope this becomes a safe place for people to come and spend time. Every time I walk through here, I’m just amazed.”

Although his life was short, Clay Madsen stood for courage and commitment to his family, his community and his God. His parents, Nancy and Larry, and his sisters, Jayme and Sarah, hope that the recreation center will be a safe place for learning the leadership and sportsmanship principles that Clay upheld throughout his life.
